Susumu Hirasawa  /  原子力 (Nuclear Power)

This song is a remake of the P-Model song “Boat,” (originally released in 1984) with the lyrics completely changed but the music staying the same as an upbeat, triumphant-sounding catchy beat. However, the sarcastic, angry, and straight-up political lyrics are now a very clear protest against Japan’s nuclear power policy.

The new song was written in June 2011, after the Tohoku earthquake that occurred a few months prior, which could be the reasoning behind the remake.

“The lives and country that we inherited,
built up with so much time and effort, are falling apart
We learned that it was for the sake of the earth
Even its name sparkles: Nuclear Power
Their plans are gradually breaking down
Oh learned teachers, answer me!
If not for the earth’s sake, then for whose?

Say No! Say No!
to dirty electricity
Say No! Say No!
to nuclides of every variety
Say No! Say No!
The atoms will accumulate for generations

A box lunch of plutonium
A dessert of assorted nuclides
With this recipe of love, I will lose you
Look, upwind — Nuclear Power!
Their plans are gradually getting out of hand
Oh all-knowing television, answer me!
If not for the sake of our lifestyles, then for whose?

Say No! Say No!
to dirty electricity
Say No! Say No!
to nuclides of every variety
Say No! Say No!
The atoms will rain down on us for generations

Hiroshima, Nagasaki, Fukushima
Indexed in history under the words “radiation exposure”
It’s spread all throughout this obstinate country
as far as the eye can see — Japan’s Nuclear Power
Their plans are gradually coming to light
Oh well-informed newspapers, answer me!
If not for Japan’s sake, then for whose?

Say No! Say No!
to dirty electricity
Say No! Say No!
to nuclides of every variety
Say No! Say No!
The accumulating atoms
Say No! Say No!
trail along behind us

Say No! Say No!
to dirty electricity
Say No! Say No!
to nuclides of every variety
Say No! Say No!
The atoms will rain down on us for generations”
